Flood Protection in Ireland - Checklist for handling a flooded home

Checklist for handling a flooded home

Be prepared:

  • Stock up on sand bags at your local DIY store.
  • Buy a front/rear door barrier, depending on which entrance is likely to be exposed to flood water. Most flood door barriers will have fixing clips or other mechanical fixings which are pre-fitted in advance. You can then fit them very quickly if flooding does occur.
  • Buy and fit vent or airbrick covers. One of the main areas where water gets in during a flood is through the airbricks, which are evident in most external walls of houses.

When flooding occurs:

  • If you have oil fired heating, turn off oil supply at your tank.
  • Gather up your essential items and bring them upstairs or high enough so that they won’t get wet.
  • If possible move your valuables upstairs.
  • Turn off your gas, electricity and water supply when flood water is about to enter your home provided it’s safe to do so.
  • Move your family and pets upstairs, or to a high place with a means of escape.
  • Never ever touch sources of electricity when standing in flood water.
  • Keep listening to your local news stations for flood updates.
  • Stay calm and call 999 if you need help.

If you are leaving your property:

  • Prepare your home as above.
  • Talk to your insurance provider about the alternative accommodation options which are available under your insurance cover. AA Home Insurance will provide alternative accommodation.
  • Ensure you consider essentials such as medication, clothing, important personal items such as phones, wallets, handbags and items you will need day to day.
  • Ensure your property and outbuildings are securely locked before you leave.
  • Don’t return until it’s safe to do so. Listen to advice from your local authorities as to when it’s safe to return to your house.

Flood water may contain sewage:

  • Avoid walking through flood water and educate your children on the health risks.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly if contact is unavoidable.
